Caye's Calling

An old tin,
red and worn,
hides some of my most favorite of traveling trinkets.

Mostly seashells.
A few coins from foreign countries.
Stick pearls. Beach trash.
Old washed-up poker chips,
bleached from the sun.
A snapshot of a fence made of surfboards...
when you had to print your photos
with film, paper, and patience.
Before electronics were *smart*
and the internet was something
you had to have a library card to use.

This is a tin of me.
A hinged glimpse into who I wanted to be,
when I wasn't being me.
I feel it as a long-lost echo,
 hollering down the hall.
And I can just barely hear it still.

Now I stand in one place,
for awhile.
Staring at that tin.
Soaking up the filtered sunshine in my studio.
Remembering that there was a time
I was unafraid of change.
In fact, I was addicted to it.
I was restless, wreckless, and stupid.

I miss that me sometimes.

and I miss the ocean.

chosen for it's likeness
to the color of the caribbean.

Here's somethin' cool....

Before leaving for Mexico, my friend Ali came to the studio for the afternoon,
notebook in hand, for an "assignment" at the local community college.
This went in their paper!  How cool!

los muertos

Small town of Limones,
we passed it 50 times on the highway it seemed.
Hiding in plain sight.
This cemetary caught my eye.

Los Muertos in spanish means "the dead"...
and yet,
this place bustles with color and seeming energy.
Empty beer bottles,
with a sip for the lost loved one left behind.
Flowers placed in old coffee cans,
 plastic bottles, glass jars.
Notes left behind on weathered paper...
burning candles in the middle of the day.

This place is not where you hide your dead.
It's where you celebrate them.

Belize

A long weekend in Caye Caulker...
Absolutely wonderful.
Caribbean Soul.
This was my favorite part of the trip.

xcalak

...

pronounced 'shh-ka-lak'

Tiny fishing town hiding from the world,
minus a few saltwater fishermen
and a few ex-pats.

Hammock time,
tequila drinks out of coconuts,
best friends,
and a great wading beach for finding the elusive bonefish.

Not a bad place to hang.
